A doctoral engineer at the University of Stuttgart has designed a plasma thruster that uses molecules from Earth's upper atmosphere as propellant, potentially letting satellites stay in very low orbit indefinitely without carrying heavy tanks of fuel. Laboratory tests showed the engine can generate steady plasma using only 50 to 60 watts of power.
