Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have documented a previously unknown phenomenon in which thousands of woodlice gather beneath streetlights at night and walk in endless circular processions, sometimes trapping over 5,000 individuals in a single swirling group. The behavior appears to begin when the small crustaceans are drawn to the light and then become stuck following the circular edge of the illuminated patch, with predators such as centipedes taking advantage of the helpless crowds.
