On September 3, 2026, a hobbyist metal detectorist named Kalle Lappinen uncovered two birch bark containers packed with silver coins near the village of Sysma, Finland. Archaeologists led by Esko Tikkala recovered the full hoard, which weighs about 4.5 kilograms and is now considered the largest Late Iron Age, or Viking Age, coin hoard ever found in Finland.
