Scientists have confirmed that the Himalayan pangolin is its own distinct species, using DNA pulled from a museum specimen collected in Nepal in 1836. The animal has been given the name Manis aurita, a name first proposed the same year the specimen was collected but never confirmed until now. The discovery gives conservationists a new genetic tool to trace illegally trafficked pangolin scales back to the region they came from.
