
Scientists have published findings in Nature describing a vast ancient whale graveyard in the Diamantina Zone of the southeastern Indian Ocean, stretching 1,200 kilometers along the seafloor at depths up to 7,000 meters, containing 476 fossil cetaceans dating back 5.3 million years and a newly described extinct whale species named Pterocetus diamantinae.
