TESS Discovers Two 'Cotton Candy' Super-Puff Exoplanets Orbiting a Sun-Like Star
Astronomers announced on June 25, 2026 the discovery of TOI-791 b and TOI-791 c, two ultra-low-density gas giant exoplanets orbiting a Sun-like star 1,113 light-years away. The planets, nicknamed 'super-puffs' or 'cotton candy' worlds, have densities lower than any previously known gas giant. TOI-791 b is about 3% the mass of Jupiter while being nearly Jupiter-sized, and TOI-791 c is about 5.9% Jupiter's mass. Originally found by NASA's TESS space telescope, both planets are earmarked for follow-up study by the James Webb Space Telescope.
