Astronomers Find a Third Hidden Planet Circling a Nearby Young Star
Astronomers using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and Europe's Very Large Telescope have discovered a third planet, Beta Pictoris d, orbiting the young star Beta Pictoris, hiding in plain sight in more than a decade of archived observations. The gas giant is roughly 2.4 times the mass of Jupiter and 100 times fainter than the system's first known planet, making Beta Pictoris only the second star system known to host at least three directly imaged planets.
