A study published in the journal Nature on August 27, 2026, found that Mars's interior is far hotter on one side than the other, with the southern half running roughly 200 to 400 degrees Celsius hotter than the north and possibly partly molten. Led by Alexander Berne of the University of Arizona, the team used a technique called tidal tomography to peer inside the planet without digging, and the discovery reshapes what scientists thought they knew about Mars's geologic past.
