
A study published in Nature Communications reveals that a fat molecule called phosphatidylcholine declines with age inside the membranes of mitochondria, the energy-producing compartments of cells, causing them to fragment and lose function in a way that drives many symptoms of aging. When scientists boosted this molecule in old worms, mitochondria returned to a youthful structure within just two days, and similar improvements appeared in human cell cultures. The researchers say the finding reframes mitochondrial aging as reversible rather than inevitable, opening a potential path to dietary or therapeutic intervention.
