Engineers at HRL Laboratories have built an 18 qubit silicon chip that can detect and fix its own errors while operating on its own inside an extremely cold chamber, without needing constant wires running to room temperature equipment. The breakthrough, published as IBM moves to acquire HRL, could help make future quantum computers far easier to scale up.
