Study Suggests Venus Once Had a Moon That Its Own Slow Spin Destroyed

New research from scientists at the University of California, Riverside, and the University of Bordeaux suggests that Venus once had its own moon, and that the moon survived for nearly 2 billion years before being destroyed. The study, published September 14, 2026, in The Astrophysical Journal, argues that Venus's extremely slow rotation pulled the moon inward until it crashed into the planet, unlike Earth, whose faster spin pushes the Moon slowly away.
