Geologists at the University of Texas at Austin have redated the buried Ames impact structure in Oklahoma using uranium and lead inside zircon crystals, moving the strike from about 467 million years ago to roughly 370 million years ago. The older figure came from conodont teeth that were already ancient when the meteorite hit and were scrambled through the debris. The new age removes Ames from a theorised cluster of Ordovician impacts and places it close to the Frasnian and Famennian extinction that devastated marine life around 372 million years ago.
