A new study of 18 famous 'Venus' figurines carved from mammoth ivory roughly 18,000 years ago at the Mizyn site in Ukraine finds that the Ice Age artists did not simply decorate the ivory, they carefully observed and followed its natural internal growth lines while engraving their zigzag designs. Researchers from Ukraine, Norway, Germany, and the UK used high-resolution microscopy and 3D digital modeling to reach the conclusion.
