Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have discovered a giant ten sided, or decagon, wave circling Saturn's south pole, the first time such a large and regular many sided pattern has ever been seen in that hemisphere. Published on September 2, 2026, in the journal Science Advances, the shape is about 104,250 miles wide, and it stands in sharp contrast to the famous six sided hexagon that has long circled Saturn's north pole. Unlike the steady northern hexagon, the new southern shape appears to change more over time, and scientists are not yet sure why it has ten sides or exactly when it formed.
