Why Portuguese needs a live tutor, not another app
Nasal vowels
'Pão' (bread), 'mãe' (mother), 'bom' (good): Portuguese pushes vowels through the nose in a way English never does. Say them without the nasal sound and you are hard to understand. This is a pronunciation habit that forms only by hearing the model and being corrected.
Ser and estar, and the little words that merge
Like Spanish, Portuguese has two verbs for 'to be'. It also fuses prepositions with articles: 'em' plus 'o' is 'no', 'de' plus 'a' is 'da'. On paper this is simple. In a fast sentence learners say 'em o centro' and the listener hears a foreigner.
Brazil and Portugal sound different
