- Talk for five to ten minutes. Kate adapts the speed and vocabulary to your level and keeps the conversation moving.

For a woman speaking, 'rotze' becomes 'rotza', and 'be' plus 'ha' contracts into 'ba' attached to the noun. Kate explains in English, then asks what you want to order so you say 'rotza' again immediately.

Why people use it
- Israeli family. Grandparents, cousins or in-laws who switch to English the moment you hesitate. Rehearse the dinner before the dinner.
- Hebrew school graduates. You can read and you can follow a service. Now you want to answer someone who asks how you are.
- Aliyah or a long stay. Practice the apartment viewing, the doctor's visit, the bank and the phone call to a government office.
- Work with Israelis. Small talk before the meeting, and enough Hebrew to follow what happens when the room stops speaking English.
- Between Ulpan classes. A class teaches you the form. Kate gives you the extra speaking time a class of twenty cannot.
Who it is not for
Kate teaches spoken Modern Hebrew. She is not a course in biblical Hebrew, in reading the prayer book or in preparing a Torah portion, and a teacher or a synagogue program will serve you far better for those.
She will not teach you to write, and she is not a full grammar course. If you are starting from zero and want the alphabet first, spend a week or two on that, or use the guided First Words lessons, which teach short phrases in English.
She is also not a person. She can occasionally mishear you, particularly on a noisy line, and she will not know your family the way a human tutor comes to. Many learners use both: Kate for frequent speaking practice, a human teacher now and then for depth.
Why Hebrew needs a live tutor, not another app
Reading is not the bottleneck, speaking is
Many English speakers can sound out Hebrew from years of Hebrew school and still cannot ask for a coffee in Tel Aviv. Prayer-book Hebrew and street Hebrew share an alphabet and little else. The vocabulary, the speed and the slang of everyday Israeli speech are learned by speaking with someone who answers back.
Roots and binyanim
Hebrew builds words from three-letter roots poured into patterns: k-t-v gives 'katav' (he wrote), 'nichtav' (was written), 'hichtiv' (dictated), 'hitkatev' (corresponded). It is elegant and it is a lot to hold in your head. Speakers learn to feel the pattern by using it, not by memorising the chart.
Gender in every sentence, including 'you'
'Ata' to a man, 'at' to a woman, and the verb changes with them: 'ata rotze', 'at rotza'. English speakers get the noun genders wrong and the second-person forms wrong, every sentence, until someone corrects them every time. That is the whole reason for a live tutor.
