Scientists have formally described a new species of walking shark discovered in the shallow tidal waters of Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea. Named Hemiscyllium dudgeonae, or Dudgeon's walking shark, the small brownish shark propels itself across coral and rock using its paired pectoral and pelvic fins to walk rather than swim. It is the tenth species in the Hemiscyllium genus and the first new walking shark described since 2013. Researchers immediately flagged it as potentially endangered due to its tiny geographic range.
