Using ultraviolet observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have directly confirmed four white dwarf stars hiding in plain sight beside brighter red dwarf companions within about 65 light-years of Earth. The dead stars had been suspected for decades but were too faint to see next to their glowing partners. One of the white dwarfs, just 25 light-years away, took nearly three decades to confirm, and the findings offer a new window into how binary star systems evolve.
