Tech Giants Race to Build AI Data Centers in Orbit

SpaceX, Google, the startup Starcloud, and China's main state space contractor are all pursuing plans to place AI computing hardware in orbit around Earth, betting on abundant sunlight and space's cold vacuum to power and cool the hardware. SpaceX's FCC filing envisions up to one million satellites that could eventually generate around 100 gigawatts of AI computing capacity, but engineers still must solve problems like cooling, remote repairs, radiation, and orbital debris.
