Alphabet's life sciences unit Verily applied to the US Environmental Protection Agency for an Experimental Use Permit to release up to 32 million Wolbachia-infected male Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes across California and Florida over two years under its Debug program. The male mosquitoes carry bacteria that render wild female mosquitoes' eggs inviable, suppressing the mosquito population without releasing genetically modified organisms. A Fresno pilot study achieved more than 90 percent population suppression, and the EPA's public comment period closed on June 5, 2026.
