Using the powerful ALMA radio telescope in Chile, astronomers have mapped the inner atmosphere of Betelgeuse, the huge red supergiant star in Orion, and found bright, uneven hot spots that have lasted for at least seven years. Scientists think a small companion star may be shaping the pattern, and the discovery challenges current models of how giant stars behave near the end of their lives.
