A new isotope study published in June 2026 has confirmed that Stonehenge's six-tonne Altar Stone originated in the Orcadian Basin of the Scottish Highlands, roughly 700 kilometres from Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain in England. The stone, long assumed to come from Wales, was transported around 2,600 BC and is the longest-distance stone movement from any monument of its era ever identified. Researchers say the feat points to remarkable organisational capacity in Neolithic Britain.
