Physicists with the Super-Kamiokande Collaboration, working at a giant detector buried deep in the Japanese Alps, have found the first tentative sign of the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background, a faint, constant flow of neutrinos left behind by every supernova explosion in the universe's history. The signal, based on nearly 5,000 days of data, reaches a confidence level of about 99.5 percent, encouraging but still short of the threshold physicists require to call it an official discovery.
