Archaeologists working beneath Lake Bolsena in central Italy have recovered the first textile fragment ever documented at the submerged Iron Age settlement of Gran Carro, more than 60 years after investigations there began. The finely woven scrap, preserved in the lake's oxygen-free mud, suggests the community that lived there nearly 3,000 years ago had considerable weaving skill.
