An international team using the National Science Foundation's Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii has captured the highest-resolution images of the Sun's surface ever recorded, revealing small swirling plasma patterns known as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities that scientists had predicted for decades but never actually observed. Researchers say the newly seen vortices, spaced roughly 50 to 65 kilometers apart, may help explain why the Sun's outer atmosphere becomes far hotter than its surface, a long-standing mystery in solar physics.
