Using the world's most powerful solar telescope, astronomers have captured the sharpest images ever taken of the sun's surface, revealing countless tiny whirlpools of plasma only about 20 kilometers wide. The discovery, published in Nature, may help explain why the sun's outer atmosphere is far hotter than its surface.
