Finnish energy company Wartsila successfully operated the world's first large-scale 100% hydrogen combustion engine on Spain's national electricity grid at its Bermeo laboratory in the Basque Country on June 11, 2026. The Wartsila 31H2 engine produces up to 9.8 megawatts of power from pure hydrogen, roughly equivalent to 13,000 horsepower. The demonstration marks a pivotal step toward using hydrogen as a dispatchable backup power source when wind and solar energy fall short.
