An international team of researchers has shown, for the first time, that ancient human DNA can survive directly on the walls of prehistoric caves, including hand stencils at Spain's famous Altamira cave. Published in Nature Communications, the study found genetic material on five of 54 samples taken from rock art panels, opening a new way to learn about the Ice Age artists who made them without disturbing the art or the ground beneath it.
