Scientists Confirm Oldest Known Fire Use 1.79 Million Years Ago

A study published in PLOS One in June 2026 used a new luminescence technique to confirm that Homo erectus used fire inside Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa at least 1.79 million years ago, pushing back the record for controlled fire use by hundreds of thousands of years and strengthening the link between cooking and early human brain development.
