Researchers at the University of Sydney, working with the Baird Institute and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, have shown for the first time that human heart muscle cells can start dividing and regrowing after a heart attack, something seen before only in mice. The natural repair is still too weak to heal a damaged heart on its own, but scientists say understanding it could lead to new treatments that boost the heart's own ability to fix itself.
