An international team led by Spanish astrochemist Izaskun Jimenez-Serra has detected erythrulose, a four-carbon sugar, in the molecular cloud G+0.693-0.027 near the center of the Milky Way galaxy, about 26,000 light-years from Earth. Posted as an arXiv preprint in June 2026, this is the first four-carbon sugar ever found in the interstellar medium. The discovery provides a new chemical link toward possible precursors of DNA and suggests the building blocks of life may be widespread across the universe.
