🇮🇹 Italian level test
Free Italian level test: find your real level by speaking
Quick answer
The SpeakBase Italian level test is a free 3-minute spoken conversation with an AI tutor, graded on the CEFR scale from A1 to C1. You speak, Kate adjusts the difficulty as you go, and you get your level and specific tips in English at the end. No download, no card, in your browser.
Most online Italian tests are multiple choice, so they measure reading and guessing. This one measures the thing you actually want: whether you can hold a Italian conversation. You talk with Kate for about three minutes, she raises the difficulty until you start to struggle, and you get a CEFR level (A1 to C1) with specific tips in English on what to fix first.

What the test sounds like
Kate opens easy and adapts to you. A typical three minutes moves through prompts like these, in Italian:
- Tell me about your family, who lives with you?
- You are at a trattoria in Rome. Order dinner and ask what the waiter recommends.
- Describe the last trip you took. Where did you go and what did you like?
If you are stuck, say so in English. Kate explains and moves on; struggling near the end is normal and is exactly what tells the grader where your ceiling is.
What the levels mean in Italian
| Level | What you can do |
|---|---|
| A1 to A2 | Greet, order, ask prices and directions, describe your day and your family in simple sentences. |
| B1 | Narrate in the passato prossimo, book a hotel, handle a pharmacy, explain what you like and why. |
| B2 and above | Follow fast conversation, use the congiuntivo naturally, discuss work and opinions at length. |
What you get at the end
- Your CEFR level, from A1 to C1, based on the hardest questions you handled.
- Scores for fluency, vocabulary, grammar and interaction.
- Up to three concrete tips in English on what to fix first.
- A recap of your mistakes with the corrected phrases, saved for review.
The test is your first free lesson. After it, you can keep practising Italian with Kate every day for $11.99 a month, billed in US dollars, and retake the test every few weeks to watch your level move.
Frequently asked questions
How does a spoken Italian level test work?
You talk with Kate for about three minutes. She starts easy and raises the difficulty until you start to struggle, which is how a human examiner finds your ceiling. The same conversation is then graded on fluency, vocabulary, grammar and interaction and mapped to a CEFR level.
I am a complete beginner. Is the test for me?
Yes. If all you have is 'ciao' and 'grazie', Kate will find that out kindly, place you at A1 and tell you in English what to learn first. Nobody fails a placement test.
Is the result an official certificate?
No. It is a placement aligned to the CEFR bands used by CILS and CELI, so you know which exam level to aim for, but it is not a certificate. Retake it every few weeks to see your level move.
