For schools, colleges and universities

Place every student at the right level, and show what your course changed.

A remote, proctored test of reading, listening, writing and speaking. Students take it from home or a computer room, and you see every result by class and by skill.

Use cases

Where schools use it

Placement before a course

Put each student in the right group from day one, with a level for each skill rather than one general score.

Exit and progress testing

Test again at the end of a term or a course and report the change in CEFR levels per skill.

Admission screening

Check the English of applicants who do not hold a recognised certificate, before an interview.

Speaking, measured properly

Most placement tests skip speaking. Here every student answers five spoken questions, scored from the audio.

How it runs

From one class to the whole school.

Start with one group, compare the results with your teachers' judgement, then roll it out.

Every participant takes the same test as individuals do: four skills, about 70 minutes, scored as described on the scoring page.

  1. Pilot with one group

Test a class or an intake and compare the levels with what your teachers see.

  2. Set up classes

Create your groups and send each one its invite link.

  3. Students test

At home or in a computer room, inside a window you choose. Camera on, ID checked.

  4. Read the results

Levels per skill, per student and per class, with certificates students can share.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can students take the test at school?

Yes. Any computer with a camera and a microphone works, so a computer room is fine as long as each student has a quiet place and their own headset.

What age is the test for?

The texts and questions are written for adults and older teenagers. It suits upper secondary, college, university and adult education students.

Do we see the speaking answers?

You see each student's level and score for every skill. Recordings are used for scoring and integrity checks and are deleted after 90 days.

Is the result recognised for admission elsewhere?

It is a CEFR-aligned certificate issued by SpeakBase. Each institution decides what it accepts, and it is not a replacement for IELTS or TOEFL where those are required.

Place students by level, not by guesswork.
