Level 1 - Absolute Beginner
Stonehenge is a very old circle of large stones in England. It was built about 4,500 years ago.
In the middle of Stonehenge there is a big flat stone. It is called the Altar Stone. It weighs six tons.
Scientists found out where this stone came from. It came from Scotland, which is about 700 kilometres away.
People a very long time ago moved this heavy stone all the way from Scotland to England. They did this on purpose.

Level 2 - Elementary
A new study published on June 4 in the Journal of Quaternary Science found that the Altar Stone at Stonehenge came from northeast Scotland, not from Wales as previously believed. The stone weighs six tons and lies flat at the centre of the ancient monument in England.
Scientists used a technique called geochemical fingerprinting to trace the stone's origin. By analysing the mix of minerals and chemical elements in the stone, they matched it to rocks in the Grampian region of Scotland, about 700 kilometres away.
Researchers also tested whether a glacier could have carried the stone naturally from Scotland to England. Their modelling found no ice-sheet pathway that could explain the stone's journey, which means early humans must have transported it deliberately.
The discovery changes our understanding of Stonehenge. It shows that Neolithic people in northeast Scotland were connected to, and took part in, the building of one of the world's most famous monuments.

- deliberately
- done on purpose, with a clear intention
- Grampian

- modelling
- using computers or mathematics to simulate a real-world process
- monument
- a large structure built to mark an important place or event
Level 3 - Intermediate
A study published in the Journal of Quaternary Science on June 4, 2026 has conclusively identified the source of the six-ton Altar Stone at the centre of Stonehenge as the Grampian region of northeast Scotland, approximately 700 kilometres from the monument's location on Salisbury Plain in southern England. The finding overturns decades of scholarship that placed the stone's origin in Wales.
The research team applied geochemical fingerprinting, analysing trace element concentrations and isotopic ratios in the sandstone to produce a chemical signature that was matched against a comprehensive database of British and Irish rock formations. The Grampian match was both unique and statistically robust.
To test whether glacial transport could offer a natural explanation, the team used ice-sheet modelling to reconstruct plausible ice-flow pathways during the relevant Pleistocene and Holocene periods. No viable pathway linking northeast Scotland to Salisbury Plain was identified, ruling out glaciation and leaving deliberate human transport as the only viable explanation.
The discovery repositions northeast Scotland as an active participant in the monument's construction, extending the known geographic network of Stonehenge's builders by several hundred kilometres and raising new questions about the social and logistical organisation of Neolithic British societies.
- isotopic ratio
- the proportion of different forms of the same element in a sample, used to identify the sample's geographical origin
- trace element
- a chemical element present in very small amounts in a rock, used as a marker for its geographic source
- Pleistocene
- a geological epoch lasting from about 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago, characterized by repeated ice ages
- Holocene
- the current geological epoch, beginning about 11,700 years ago after the last ice age
- Salisbury Plain
- the open chalk plateau in southern England where Stonehenge stands
- glaciation
- the process by which glaciers form, spread, and then retreat, transporting rock and sediment
- statistically robust
- producing results strong enough to be reliable and unlikely to be due to chance
- logistical
- relating to the organisation of complex activities, especially moving people or materials
Level 4 - Advanced
Research published on June 4, 2026 in the Journal of Quaternary Science has definitively provenance the Altar Stone -- the six-ton Devonian sandstone slab lying prostrate at Stonehenge's geometric centre -- to the Grampian Highlands of northeast Scotland, a source locality approximately 700 kilometres distant from Salisbury Plain. The finding dismantles a long-standing consensus, anchored in petrographic similarity to Pembrokeshire formations, that the bluestones and larger sarsen megaliths exhausted the geographic ambition of Neolithic builders.
The research methodology combined multi-element trace geochemistry with strontium and lead isotopic fingerprinting against a calibrated reference database spanning British and Irish Precambrian and Palaeozoic basement terranes. The Grampian signature was not merely suggestive but uniquely and reproducibly diagnostic, satisfying the statistical thresholds applied in modern provenance science.
The glacial transport hypothesis -- historically invoked as a passive mechanism for moving large lithic masses from peripheral British highlands -- was subjected to rigorous ice-sheet reconstruction for both Last Glacial Maximum and deglaciation phases. No modelled scenario produced an ice-flow trajectory capable of depositing a Grampian-sourced block at Stonehenge's latitude, eliminating the null hypothesis and leaving intentional anthropogenic transport as the only parsimonious explanation.
The geopolitical and social implications resonate beyond the stratigraphic record: the deliberate procurement of a monument stone from a source 700 kilometres away implies long-distance social networks, coordinated multi-stage transport logistics almost certainly involving both overland and coastal maritime segments, and a degree of ideological or political investment by northeast Scottish communities in a monument located at the opposite end of Britain -- fundamentally revising the geographic imagination of Neolithic connectivity.
