Level 1 — Absolute Beginner
The United States and Iran have agreed to stop attacking each other.
A US official told reporters on June 29, 2026 that both countries will allow ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz again.
Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. Many oil tankers use it every day.
The agreement came after several days of fighting. Iran attacked US military bases. The US attacked targets inside Iran.
- agreement
- a decision made by two or more groups to do something together
- official
- a person who works for a government and has an important job
- strait
- a narrow body of water connecting two larger bodies of water
- tanker
- a large ship that carries oil or other liquids
- ceasefire
- a stopping of fighting agreed to by two sides in a conflict
- military
- relating to an army, navy, or air force
- attacks
- actions intended to harm or damage something or someone
- commercial
- relating to trade or business for profit
Level 2 — Elementary
The United States and Iran agreed on June 29, 2026 to halt their exchange of attacks and to allow commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement followed several days of escalation. Iran's Revolutionary Guard had fired missiles and drones at US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain. The US responded with air strikes on Iranian targets.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important shipping lanes. About 20 percent of all traded oil passes through it. Closing it raises global oil prices and hurts economies worldwide.
A fragile ceasefire agreement, called the Burgenstock MoU, was signed on June 19. The new halt in fighting gives negotiators more time to continue talks on all areas of the agreement.
- halt
- to stop something from continuing
- escalation
- a situation in which conflict or tension grows more serious
- Revolutionary Guard
- Iran's elite military force, known by the initials IRGC
- commercial shipping
- the movement of goods by ships for business purposes
- missile
- a self-propelled weapon that flies through the air to hit a target
- negotiator
- a person who works to reach an agreement between two parties
- MoU
- short for Memorandum of Understanding, a written agreement between parties
- fragile
- easily broken or destroyed; in politics, likely to collapse without careful handling
Level 3 — Intermediate
On June 29, 2026, a United States official announced that Washington and Tehran had agreed to cease hostilities and restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply transits each day.
The agreement came after a rapid escalation over the preceding 48 hours. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck US military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain with missiles and drones on June 28, prompting a second night of American air strikes on Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communications systems, and air defense sites.
The ceasefire had already been under severe strain. A Memorandum of Understanding brokered by Pakistan and signed at Burgenstock, Switzerland, on June 19 was intended to guide both sides toward a formal peace agreement within 60 days. However, disputes over the implementation of IAEA inspections and recurring strikes had repeatedly threatened to derail the deal.
With both sides publicly signaling willingness to stand down, technical talks are scheduled to continue across the four working groups established under the MoU, covering sanctions relief, nuclear affairs, reconstruction financing, and compliance monitoring. Oil markets reacted cautiously, with Brent crude still above $100 per barrel.
- cease hostilities
- to officially stop all fighting between opposing forces
- freedom of navigation
- the internationally recognized right of ships to pass through international waters
- Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)
- Iran's elite ideological military force, distinct from the regular armed forces
- surveillance infrastructure
- facilities and systems used to observe and monitor an area or adversary
- compliance monitoring
- a process of verifying that parties to an agreement are following its terms
- derail
- to cause something, such as a plan or negotiation, to fail or go in the wrong direction
- sanctions relief
- the removal or easing of economic penalties imposed on a country
- brokered
- arranged or negotiated by a third party acting as an intermediary
Level 4 — Advanced
Washington announced on June 29, 2026 that US and Iranian forces had agreed to stand down and restore commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a tentative de-escalatory step that nonetheless leaves the fundamental architecture of the conflict unresolved and oil markets pricing persistent geopolitical risk into every barrel.
The agreement emerged from a volatile 48-hour window in which Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched drone and missile strikes against US military installations at Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait and the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, triggering retaliatory American air strikes on Iranian air defense networks, drone stockpiles, and minelayer capabilities on the Qeshm and Sirik littoral zones for the second consecutive night.
The backdrop is a Memorandum of Understanding brokered by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at Burgenstock, Switzerland, on June 19, whose text commits both parties to a 60-day roadmap toward a formal peace agreement but whose working groups have deadlocked over two existential issues: Tehran's refusal to accept on-site IAEA verification under the Additional Protocol, and Washington's insistence on pre-condition surrender of highly enriched uranium stockpiles. Each side has accused the other of negotiating in bad faith while continuing kinetic operations.
With Brent crude still above $100 per barrel, Lloyd's war-risk premiums elevated, and hyperscaler energy demand suppressing spare refining capacity, the economic stakes of another collapse are severe. The four working groups covering sanctions termination, nuclear affairs, reconstruction finance, and compliance monitoring are scheduled to resume in Geneva. Whether this latest ceasefire holds depends on whether either side calculates that renewed escalation serves its strategic interests, a judgment both capitals have repeatedly revised in recent weeks.
- de-escalatory
- describing actions intended to reduce the intensity or danger of a conflict
- littoral
- relating to the coastal zone or shoreline of a body of water
- kinetic operations
- a military term for direct, physical action such as air strikes or bombardment
- Additional Protocol
- an agreement that gives the IAEA broader powers to inspect a country's nuclear facilities
- enriched uranium
- uranium processed to increase its concentration of fissile material, a key step toward nuclear fuel or weapons
- bad faith
- dishonest or deliberately misleading behavior during negotiations
- spare refining capacity
- the unused ability of oil refineries to process additional crude oil
- deadlocked
- reached a point where no progress can be made because neither side will change its position
