Level 1 — Absolute Beginner
Scientists in Singapore made a new kind of light pattern. It is called an optical skyrmion.
An optical skyrmion is a small, twisting shape made of light. It looks a little like the spikes on a hedgehog.
The scientists used an old trick with light. It is called the Poisson spot, and people first saw it 200 years ago.
The scientists only need a laser and a small round disc. This is much easier than using expensive special materials. The idea could help build better computers and data storage in the future.

Level 2 — Elementary
Researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have created stable, swirling structures of light called optical skyrmions, tiny patterns that resemble the spikes of a hedgehog.
To make them, the team used the Poisson spot, a light effect first observed nearly two hundred years ago, in which a bright spot appears at the center of the shadow cast by a small circular object.
Instead of relying on complex and costly engineered materials, which scientists usually use to generate skyrmions, the researchers simply aimed a laser at a small circular disc.
This much simpler setup gives scientists an easier way to generate, study, and adjust optical skyrmions. The research, led by Assistant Professor Shen Yijie and published in the journal Optica on June 18, 2026, could support future advances in data storage, communications, and computing.

Level 3 — Intermediate
A team of researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has demonstrated a novel technique for generating optical skyrmions, stable, topologically structured configurations of light whose swirling geometry resembles the spikes of a hedgehog.
Their approach exploits the Poisson spot, a diffraction phenomenon first documented nearly two centuries ago, in which constructive interference produces a bright point at the exact center of the shadow cast by a small circular obstacle.
Where conventional methods for generating skyrmions typically require intricately engineered materials or complex optical setups, the NTU team achieved the same effect by directing a laser at a simple circular disc, dramatically lowering the barrier to producing and manipulating these structures.
Led by Assistant Professor Shen Yijie of NTU's School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the findings were published in the journal Optica on June 18, 2026, and are considered significant because skyrmions are increasingly viewed as promising candidates for encoding information in next-generation data storage, communications, and computing systems.

Level 4 — Advanced
A team of researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has demonstrated a novel route to generating optical skyrmions, topologically protected configurations of light whose swirling internal structure evokes the radiating spikes of a hedgehog, by exploiting a diffraction phenomenon documented nearly two centuries ago.
The technique harnesses the Poisson spot, in which constructive interference around the edges of a small circular obstacle produces a paradoxical bright point at the exact center of its geometric shadow, a result so counterintuitive on its first proposal that it was initially advanced as a refutation of the wave theory of light before experimental confirmation vindicated it.
Whereas conventional generation of optical skyrmions typically demands intricately engineered metamaterials or elaborate multi-component optical setups, the NTU team achieved comparable topological structures by simply directing a laser at an unadorned circular disc, substantially lowering the technical and financial barrier to producing, studying, and dynamically manipulating these structures.
Led by Assistant Professor Shen Yijie of NTU's School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and published in the journal Optica on June 18, 2026, the findings carry implications beyond pure optics: skyrmions are increasingly regarded as viable information carriers for next-generation data storage, communication, and computing architectures, where their topological stability could confer resilience against the noise and decoherence that degrade conventional encoding schemes.
