Master the Arabic jussive mood and the particles that trigger it, such as لم, لمّا and prohibitive لا. Example phrases contrast them with ordinary negation.
لم يذهب
he did not go (لم + jussive = past negation)
لم تكتبي
you (fem. sing.) did not write (jussive drops the final ن)
لم نفهم
we did not understand (jussive)
لم يقولوا
they did not say (jussive drops the final ن)
لمّا ترجعْ
she has not returned yet (لمّا + jussive = not yet)
لا تفعل
don't do (it)! (prohibitive لا + jussive)
لا تقولوا
don't say (it)! (prohibitive, masc. pl.)
لا يكذب
he does not lie (ordinary negation, verb not in the jussive)
لا أنسى
I do not forget (ordinary negation)
إن لم تدرسْ فستفشل
If you don't study, you will fail. (conditional with لم)
لم يكن قد وصل حين أتيت
He had not yet arrived when I came. (pluperfect)
إن لم تجدْ حلاً فاستشرِ المعلم
If you don't find a solution, consult the teacher.
لا يسمع صوتي
He does not hear my voice.
لم أقرأ الرسالة بعد
I have not read the letter yet.
لا تتأخري عن الدرس
Don't be late for the lesson! (to a woman)
لمّا يصلِ الخبرُ
The news has not arrived yet.
إذا لم تكن موافقاً، فقل لا
If you don't agree, say no.
لا تضيع الوقت
Don't waste time!
لم يعرفوا الحقيقة إلا بعدها
They did not know the truth until afterwards.
لا تقل ذلك أبداً
Never say that!
من لا يجتهد لا ينجح في الحياة
Whoever does not work hard does not succeed in life.
إن لم تكفِ الوسائل الحالية فيجب تغييرها
If the current means are not sufficient, they must be changed.
لا تكونوا كسالى في عملكم
Don't be lazy in your work! (masc. pl.)
لم يصدقوا أنه جاء
They did not believe that he had come.
لا يجوز أن تتكلمي في الفصل
You (fem.) are not allowed to talk in class.
إذا لم تهتموا بصحتكم فستمرضون
If you don't look after your health, you will get sick. (masc. pl.)
لا أستطيع أن أتركك وحدك
I can't leave you alone.
لم تزر مصر قط
She has never visited Egypt.
لا تنسي أن تطفئي الضوء
Don't forget to turn off the light! (to a woman)
من يلزم الصمت لا يُخطئ
Whoever keeps silent makes no mistakes.
إن لم نتحدْ فسنضعف
If we don't unite, we will grow weak.
لا يعجبني هذا الأسلوب
I don't like this style.
لم ترد على رسالتي
She did not reply to my message.
لا تتردد في طلب المساعدة
Don't hesitate to ask for help!
ما لم نتعاون، لا نحقق الهدف
Unless we cooperate, we won't achieve the goal.
لا يمكنك أن تفهم دونما شرح
You can't understand without an explanation.
لم يقبل الشروط الجديدة
He did not accept the new terms.
لا تتكلموا بصوت عالٍ في المكتبة
Don't talk loudly in the library! (masc. pl.)
من لا يحترم النظام يُطرد
Whoever does not respect the rules gets expelled.
إذا لم تبدؤوا الآن فستندمون
If you don't start now, you will regret it. (masc. pl.)
