OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has proposed giving the United States government a 5 percent equity stake in the company, worth roughly $42.6 billion at OpenAI's most recent valuation. The plan, modeled on Alaska's oil-wealth Permanent Fund, would ask every leading American AI developer to contribute a similar share into a government-held fund. The idea is still conceptual, and rivals like Google, Meta, and Anthropic have not agreed to join.
