Level 1 - Absolute Beginner
Nasdaq is a big stock market in the United States. Kraken is a company that lets people buy and sell crypto money, like Bitcoin. Payward is the parent company of Kraken.
On September 10, 2026, Nasdaq Ventures announces a plan to invest 100 million dollars in Payward. Nasdaq Ventures is the part of Nasdaq that invests in other companies. This deal values Payward at 21 billion dollars.
Nasdaq and Payward already work together on Nasdaq Equity Tokens, called NETs. NETs are digital tokens that stand for real shares of stock on Nasdaq. People will buy and trade these tokens on Kraken.
The two companies also sign a new safety agreement. Nasdaq will use its technology to watch trading on Kraken. The companies plan to start NETs in the second quarter of 2027.

Level 2 - Elementary
Nasdaq Ventures, the venture investing arm of the Nasdaq stock exchange, has agreed to invest 100 million dollars in Payward. Payward is the parent company of the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken. The investment values Payward at 21 billion dollars.
The deal expands an existing partnership between Nasdaq and Payward on something called Nasdaq Equity Tokens, or NETs. NETs are blockchain-based digital tokens that represent shares of publicly traded, Nasdaq-listed stocks.
Kraken's trading platform will serve as a distribution channel for these tokenized shares. The tokens will carry shareholder voting rights equal to owning the real Nasdaq-listed shares. The companies expect to launch NETs in the second quarter of 2027.
Nasdaq and Payward also sign a new market surveillance agreement. It puts Nasdaq's monitoring technology across Payward's whole trading business, including spot crypto trading, tokenized equities, and futures and options trading.

Level 3 - Intermediate
Nasdaq Ventures, the venture investing arm of Nasdaq, has agreed to invest 100 million dollars in Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, in a deal that values Payward at 21 billion dollars. The investment deepens an already established partnership between the two companies.
That partnership centers on Nasdaq Equity Tokens, or NETs, blockchain-based digital tokens designed to represent shares of publicly traded, Nasdaq-listed stocks. Kraken's platform will act as a distribution channel for these tokenized shares, which will carry shareholder voting rights equivalent to owning the underlying Nasdaq-listed stock itself. The companies expect NETs to launch in the second quarter of 2027.
Alongside the investment, Nasdaq and Payward signed a new market surveillance agreement that extends Nasdaq's monitoring technology across Payward's entire trading stack, spanning spot cryptocurrency trading, tokenized equities, and futures and options contracts.
The announcement lands as the US crypto industry watches a Senate procedural vote scheduled for September 15, 2026, on the CLARITY Act, legislation meant to establish clear market-structure rules for cryptocurrencies. Overcoming a filibuster requires 60 votes, and the outcome remains uncertain amid unresolved disputes over ethics and market-integrity provisions. Around the same time, Bitcoin traded near 77,000 dollars as investors weighed rising odds of a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike.
- market-structure rules
- regulations that define how a financial market operates, including trading and oversight

Level 4 - Advanced
Nasdaq Ventures, the exchange operator's venture investing arm, has agreed to inject 100 million dollars into Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, a transaction that values the crypto firm at 21 billion dollars and knits the two companies more tightly together at a moment when the boundary between traditional and digital finance continues to blur.
The capital infusion deepens an existing collaboration on Nasdaq Equity Tokens, or NETs, blockchain-based instruments designed to mirror shares of publicly traded, Nasdaq-listed companies. Kraken's platform is set to function as a distribution channel for these tokenized shares, which will carry shareholder voting rights equivalent to those attached to the underlying stock itself, a structural detail meant to reassure regulators and investors that tokenization need not dilute the rights of ownership. The companies anticipate launching NETs in the second quarter of 2027.
The two firms simultaneously signed a fresh market surveillance agreement, extending Nasdaq's monitoring infrastructure across the whole of Payward's trading operations, encompassing spot cryptocurrency trading, tokenized equities, and futures and options contracts, an arrangement that signals an effort to fold crypto-native markets into the kind of oversight long associated with conventional exchanges.
The timing is notable. The deal arrives as the American crypto industry braces for a Senate procedural vote scheduled for September 15, 2026, on the CLARITY Act, legislation intended to impose coherent market-structure rules on digital assets; clearing the 60-vote threshold needed to defeat a filibuster remains far from certain given unresolved disagreements over ethics and market-integrity provisions. Bitcoin, meanwhile, hovered near 77,000 dollars as investors recalibrated their expectations around a possible Federal Reserve interest-rate hike, a backdrop of legislative and monetary uncertainty against which Nasdaq and Payward are nonetheless pressing ahead with a bet on tokenized equities.
- capital infusion
- an injection of money into a company or venture to support its operations or growth
- tokenization
- the process of converting rights to an asset into a digital token on a blockchain
