Speak English again

You understand English but can't speak it? Here is how to get your speaking back

Updated:

Quick answer

If you understand English but freeze when you have to speak, your English has not gone: the ability to recognise words survives, while the ability to retrieve them quickly in speech fades when you do not use it. Regular speaking brings it back. Practise 10 to 15 minutes a day for two to four weeks, start below your level and raise it gradually. SpeakBase gives you an AI tutor that corrects you as you speak, and a 3-minute spoken level check.

It is one of the most common things adults say: "I follow films and read emails, but when someone speaks to me in English I freeze." If you learned English at school, used it at work or on trips, and since then have mostly read and listened, this is exactly what you would expect. The good news: the foundation is still there, and getting it back is faster than learning it the first time. Below: why it happens, how to build a short comeback routine, why to start below your level, and how to find out where you stand.

A 4-week comeback routine

Ten to fifteen minutes a day. If two weeks are enough to feel at home again, skip ahead to week 3.

Why understanding survives and speaking fades

Understanding and speaking are different skills. When you listen or read, the word comes to you and you only have to recognise it. When you speak, you have to retrieve it from memory yourself, put it in the right tense and say it, within about a second. Memory research has shown for decades that recognition is easier than recall, and that retrieval routes you do not use become slow. Watching series and reading news in English keeps recognition strong but does not train retrieval. That is why you understand far more than you can say.

Why coming back is faster than the first time

Knowledge you once learned and partly forgot comes back faster than new knowledge. The effect was described in the very first memory experiments, and it is why people returning to speaking after years sometimes feel words "pop back" within days. What strengthens it is retrieval practice: not rereading word lists, but trying to say something yourself, getting stuck, hearing the right version and saying it again. Every conversation of that kind is retrieval practice.

Why you start below your level

  • In the first week the goal is speed, not complexity. Easy topics (your day, family, work) let you retrieve quickly and succeed, and that success lowers the pressure.
  • If you start with a debate on economics or politics you get stuck every sentence and wrongly conclude your English is bad. It is not bad, it is slow right now.
  • SpeakBase has a difficulty dial you can move even in the middle of a conversation: start on an easier setting and raise it once your answers come without effort.
  • The mistakes Kate corrects are saved as review cards. Five minutes on those cards after each conversation brings back the structures you are missing most.

How to find out your level now

Someone who has not spoken for years usually speaks below the level they can read, so judging yourself by reading misleads you. The SpeakBase level check is a 3-minute voice conversation in which Kate gradually raises the level of her questions, and the result is a CEFR level from A1 to C1. Take it at the end of week three or four, once your speaking has warmed up, so it measures your real level rather than the rust of day one.

A teacher, an AI tutor, or both

A teacher gives you structure, in-depth feedback and accountability. An AI tutor gives you many minutes of speaking at any hour, without embarrassment, on any topic you choose. At the comeback stage, when what matters is volume of retrieval, many people combine the two: lessons with a teacher, and short daily practice in between.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to understand English but not be able to speak it?

Yes, and it is very common. Understanding needs you to recognise words; speaking needs you to retrieve them quickly yourself. If you have mostly read, watched and listened in recent years, recognition stayed strong while retrieval weakened. It does not mean your English is gone.

How long does it take to start speaking again?

It depends on the level you had and how much you practise, so there is no single right number. What matters most is frequency: a short conversation every day beats a long one once a week. Give the routine two to four weeks before judging your progress.

Should I start by reviewing grammar?

Not as a first step. If you understand English you usually know the grammar, you just cannot retrieve it fast. Start with speaking, and review grammar only where the same mistake keeps coming back. The correction cards from your conversations show you exactly where.

I am embarrassed to speak because I know I make mistakes. What can I do?

That is exactly why you start practising without an audience. With an AI tutor you can pause, get it wrong, ask her to repeat the question and try again, with nobody watching. Most people find the pressure drops a lot after a few conversations.

Does this replace a teacher?

No. A teacher gives structure, feedback and accountability. An AI tutor gives volume of speaking, at any hour and on any topic. When the goal is to get your speaking back, many people combine the two.

How much does it cost?

The first conversation, about five minutes, is free with no card. Premium includes 150 minutes of conversation a month: $11.99 a month or $119.99 a year outside Israel, and ₪39 a month or ₪390 a year in Israel (VAT included).
