How it works

- The app distils the material into a brief of what it covers and its key facts, definitions, dates and arguments.
- Kate starts by asking what you found hardest, then asks one question at a time, from easy to harder.
How Kate examines
- She asks only about what is in the material. No general questions, no outside topics.
- Right answer: a short confirmation and the next question.
- Wrong answer: the correct answer in one sentence, you say it out loud, and the point returns later in a related question.
- Stronger students get "compare", "explain why" and "what would happen if" questions. Beginners get short factual questions and the words they need to answer.
- If the material differs from what Kate received, tell her and she continues from what you explain.
Why it works
Decades of learning research show that retrieval practice, trying to recall an answer instead of rereading it, improves long-term memory more than rereading. An oral quiz adds another layer: you have to phrase the idea in your own words, in real time. And when the quiz runs in the language you are learning, you also build subject vocabulary and confidence speaking about your real content, not about generic conversation topics.
