A black hole is a place in space where gravity is very strong. Nothing can escape a black hole, not even light.

Astronomers using NASA's Swift observatory have spotted a supermassive black hole in an unusual location, far from the center of its host galaxy where such black holes are normally found.
Because the black hole was not actively pulling in matter, it would normally stay completely invisible to telescopes. Scientists only noticed it when it ripped apart a star that wandered too close.
The event, known as a tidal disruption, released a brief but extremely powerful burst of ultraviolet light. For a short time, this flare outshone the black hole's entire host galaxy.
By studying the flare's brightness and behavior, researchers estimated the black hole's mass at around one million times the mass of our Sun. The findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Because the black hole was dormant, not actively accreting surrounding gas and dust, it would have remained entirely undetectable under normal circumstances. Its presence came to light only when a passing star strayed close enough to be torn apart by its gravity, in what astronomers term a tidal disruption event.
The resulting flare briefly outshone the black hole's entire host galaxy in ultraviolet light, a signature so distinct that it allowed researchers to both locate the black hole and estimate its mass at roughly one million times that of the Sun.
The discovery, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, adds to a small but growing catalog of so-called wandering black holes, objects that appear to have been displaced from their galaxy's center, likely through a past galactic merger, and now drift largely unseen until a chance encounter with a star briefly betrays their presence.
