DNA is the code inside our cells that tells our bodies how to grow and work. Scientists sometimes need to cut and join pieces of DNA.
Scientists at Nagoya University in Japan found a new way to do this. They use very tiny pieces of silver, called nanoparticles.
The tiny silver pieces cut DNA in exact spots. This makes it much easier to join DNA pieces back together.
The new way works up to five times better than older methods. It could help doctors make new medicines in the future.

The method coats silver nanoparticles with a protective layer called polyethylene glycol, and uses them to slice DNA strands that have been chemically modified in advance. This creates unusually long connecting sections, known as sticky ends, on the cut DNA pieces.
Because the sticky ends are so long, up to eighteen genetic letters, the DNA fragments join together two to five times more efficiently than they do using older, more traditional cutting tools called restriction enzymes.
The research team, led by Professor Hiroshi Abe and Assistant Professor Masahito Inagaki, published their findings in the journal Nucleic Acids Research. They say the technique could eventually make it easier to build large DNA sequences for gene therapies, cancer vaccines, and engineered crops.
