Google has announced plans to invest thirteen billion euros, about fifteen billion dollars, in Finland between 2027 and 2028. It is the largest single investment the company has ever announced in Europe.
The money will fund new data centers built to handle the growing demands of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Google already runs a major data center hub in the Finnish city of Hamina, and the new investment will add infrastructure in the towns of Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, in the country's colder north.
Because data centers use huge amounts of electricity, Google also signed a 22 year power agreement with the Finnish energy company Fortum. Under the deal, Google can draw up to half the output of the Loviisa nuclear power plant, helping keep the aging plant running through 2050.
