The kākāpō is a big green parrot from New Zealand. It cannot fly. It sleeps in the day and wakes up at night.
It is the heaviest parrot in the world. A male can weigh about four kilograms.
For many years there were very few kākāpō. People worked hard to help them. This year 90 baby birds were born and lived.
Now there are 325 kākāpō. This is the first time there are more than 300 in about 75 years. Scientists are very happy.

The kākāpō is the world's heaviest parrot, flightless and active at night. Males can weigh around four kilograms. The species was pushed close to extinction by introduced predators such as rats, stoats and cats, which the birds had no defence against.
The Kākāpō Recovery Programme began in 1995 with only 51 birds, including just 20 females. Ninety chicks in a single season matches what the programme managed in its first sixteen years put together.
Conservationists believe the last time the population passed 300 may have been about 75 years ago. The birds live on a small number of predator-free islands, and finding enough safe space for a growing population is now one of the programme's biggest challenges.

Kākāpō biology explains both the collapse and the difficulty of the recovery. The species is flightless, nocturnal and long-lived, and it evolved on islands with no ground-dwelling mammalian predators. Its defensive instinct is to freeze and rely on camouflage, a strategy that works against hunting birds and fails completely against rats, stoats and cats. Breeding is tied to the irregular mast fruiting of rimu trees, so females may not nest for years at a time.
Success now brings a different problem. The birds are confined to a small number of intensively managed predator-free islands, and those islands have finite carrying capacity. Every additional bird tightens the constraint, which is why the department's attention is shifting toward securing further predator-free habitat rather than simply maximising the number of chicks fledged each season.

The species remains an unusually demanding conservation subject. Kākāpō are flightless, nocturnal, exceptionally long-lived and lek-breeding, and their reproduction is coupled to the stochastic mast fruiting of rimu, which means that a productive season cannot be scheduled and a barren interval of several years is normal rather than alarming. The inherited anti-predator repertoire of freezing and cryptic plumage was calibrated against avian hunters and is actively counterproductive against olfactory mammalian predators, which is the mechanism that reduced the population to near-extinction within a century of mammalian introduction.
Success now converts one constraint into another. The population is distributed across a small set of intensively managed, predator-free offshore islands whose aggregate carrying capacity is finite and, on current trajectories, approaching. The programme's binding problem is therefore migrating from reproductive output, where the intervention toolkit is mature, to habitat supply, where the options are slower, more expensive and more politically contingent: expanding predator eradication to larger islands or establishing fenced mainland sanctuaries capable of holding a genetically viable subpopulation.
