Level 1 — Absolute Beginner
Stranger Things is a famous Netflix show. It is about children, monsters and a town called Hawkins. The main story finished in 2025.
Now Netflix has a new show in the same world. The name is Other Worlds. It starts in the year 1955, about 30 years before the first story.
The new show happens in a small town in Nevada, in the United States. Netflix says: "Before Hawkins, there was Marion." Marion is the name of the town.
Netflix showed a short video on 6 November. In the video you see a bicycle on the ground and then the sky opens. The show arrives in 2028. We do not know the actors yet.

Level 2 — Elementary
Netflix has confirmed a new live-action series set in the world of Stranger Things. The full title is Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, and it will arrive in 2028.
The announcement came on 6 November, which fans call Stranger Things Day. Netflix released a teaser lasting less than a minute. It shows a bicycle lying on its side while a 1950s song comes from a radio, then a title card reading April 19, 1955, Marion, Nevada, and finally the sky tearing open.
That date puts the new story about 30 years before Will Byers disappears in Hawkins, Indiana. Netflix has released almost no plot details. Shawn Levy, one of the producers, has only said the series will have "all-new characters, themes and mythology". No cast has been announced yet.
Kate Trefry is the writer and showrunner. She worked on the original series for years and wrote the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The British director Joe Wright, known for Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes. Matt and Ross Duffer, who created Stranger Things, are co-creators and producers of the new show.

Level 3 — Intermediate
Netflix marked Stranger Things Day on 6 November by confirming the franchise's first live-action prequel series, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, due in 2028. The teaser runs under a minute: a bicycle on its side, a 1950s tune drifting out of a radio, a title card reading April 19, 1955, Marion, Nevada, and then the sky splitting open. The accompanying line was almost a thesis statement. "Before Hawkins, there was Marion."
Chronology matters to this franchise, and the new date is deliberate. Marion in April 1955 sits roughly 30 years before Will Byers vanishes in Hawkins, Indiana, and four years before the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which unfolds largely in 1959 and centres on Henry Creel. Netflix has released almost nothing about the story itself. Shawn Levy, producing through 21 Laps, said only that the series brings "all-new characters, themes and mythology", and no cast has been named.
The creative arrangement is notable because the Duffer brothers are stepping back from daily command. Matt and Ross Duffer co-created the series with Kate Trefry and executive produce through Upside Down Pictures, but Trefry is the writer and showrunner. She spent years in the original writers' room and wrote The First Shadow for the stage. Joe Wright, the British director behind Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes and also executive produces, which implies an order of at least that length, though Netflix has not published an episode count.
Netflix's own framing of the project leaned on continuity rather than novelty. Jinny Howe, the company's head of scripted series for the United States and Canada, said the show "takes us to the 1950s with new heroes and all the heart, mystery and spectacle of the original series". Trefry, in a statement, struck a more personal note: "The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since." The Duffers, for their part, said simply that they cannot wait for audiences to see what the new team is cooking up.

Level 4 — Advanced
Netflix chose Stranger Things Day, 6 November, to confirm what the franchise's custodians have been circling for a year: a live-action prequel, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, scheduled for 2028. The reveal was characteristically parsimonious. A teaser of less than sixty seconds offers a bicycle lying on its side, a 1950s doo-wop record drifting from a radio, a title card stamped April 19, 1955, Marion, Nevada, and a final image of the sky tearing itself open, over the tagline "Before Hawkins, there was Marion."
The chosen date does real narrative work. April 1955 places the new series some three decades before Will Byers disappears in Hawkins and four years ahead of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the stage production set largely in 1959 that reconstructed the adolescence of Henry Creel. Netflix has withheld everything else. Shawn Levy, producing through 21 Laps, confined himself to the promise of "all-new characters, themes and mythology", and no casting has been announced, though the Duffer brothers' statement that they are turning next to that task suggests the search is only beginning.
The authorship arrangement is the most telling detail, because it formalises a succession. Matt and Ross Duffer co-created the series with Kate Trefry and will executive produce through Upside Down Pictures, but Trefry holds the pen and the showrunner's authority. Her credentials are internal rather than imported: years in the original writers' room, then the script for The First Shadow. Joe Wright, whose filmography runs from Atonement to Darkest Hour, directs the opening three episodes and executive produces, an engagement that implies at least a three-episode order while Netflix declines to specify a total. Both TheWrap and iHorror note that the Duffers' exclusive overall deal now sits at Paramount, with their Stranger Things obligations carved out, which makes a delegated showrunner less a courtesy than a necessity.
Netflix's rhetoric was calibrated to reassure rather than surprise. Jinny Howe, head of scripted series for the United States and Canada, said the show "takes us to the 1950s with new heroes and all the heart, mystery and spectacle of the original series", a sentence engineered to promise novelty and sameness at once. Trefry's own statement was warmer and more revealing: "The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since." Whether a prequel two generations removed from Hawkins can carry a franchise whose flagship concluded in 2025 is the open question, and 2028 is a long time to wait for the answer.

- parsimonious
- Giving away very little; extremely sparing.
- a tagline
- A short memorable phrase used to advertise something.
- to withhold
- To keep information back rather than release it.
