A company called Neuralink makes a small computer chip that goes inside the brain. It is called a brain computer interface. People can use it to control a computer with only their thoughts.
A special robot called R1 puts the chip into the brain during surgery. The robot is now faster. It can place one tiny wire in about 1.5 seconds.

Level 2 — Elementary
Neuralink, the brain computer interface company, says it is preparing to move from performing surgeries one at a time to producing its implants on a much larger scale. The shift depends heavily on improvements to its R1 surgical robot.
The upgraded robot can now insert a single thread, thinner than a human hair, in about 1.5 seconds. It can also reach depths of more than 50 millimeters into the brain, enough to work with 99 percent of human brain shapes and sizes.
A new surgical technique lets the fine threads pass through the dura, a tough membrane that protects the brain, without removing that membrane first. Engineers say this makes the operation less invasive for patients.
As of September, 12 patients are living with a Neuralink implant, and the company's biggest competitor, Synchron, has implanted its own device in about 10 patients. The first Neuralink patient has been able to control a computer cursor, play video games, browse the internet, and post on social media using thought alone.

A procedural refinement now allows the ultra-fine threads to pass through the dura mater, the tough outer membrane that shields the brain, without first excising it, a change the company frames internally as a meaningful reduction in surgical invasiveness and, by extension, in operative risk and recovery time.
The competitive landscape remains modest in absolute numbers: 12 patients currently carry a Neuralink implant, against roughly 10 for its closest rival, Synchron, whose device takes a less invasive vascular approach. Even at this early stage, the first Neuralink recipient has demonstrated cursor control, gameplay, internet browsing, and social media posting driven entirely by neural signal alone.
