Level 1 — Absolute Beginner
NASA is the United States space agency. This week, NASA chose a new space telescope. Its name is PRIMA.
PRIMA will look at a special kind of light called far-infrared light. Our eyes cannot see this light, but telescopes can detect it.
PRIMA is planned to launch into space in the year 2033. It will study stars, galaxies, and how the universe has changed over time.
PRIMA is the first telescope in a new group of NASA missions called Probe Explorers. Scientists hope it will help us learn things that other telescopes cannot show us.
- telescope
- a tool used to look at things far away, like stars
- space
- the area beyond Earth where stars and planets are
- light
- energy that lets us see things
- star
- a huge, bright ball of hot gas in space
- galaxy
- a huge group of stars, gas, and dust in space
- universe
- everything that exists in space
- launch
- to send something, like a rocket, into space
- agency
- an organization that does official work for a government
Level 2 — Elementary
NASA announced this week that it has selected a new space telescope, called PRIMA, to move forward into its next stage of development. PRIMA stands for PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics.
The telescope will study far-infrared light, a kind of light with longer wavelengths than what human eyes can see. This light can reveal details about dust, gas, and star formation that are hidden from other kinds of telescopes.
PRIMA is the first mission chosen for a new class of NASA astrophysics missions called Probe Explorers, part of the agency's long-running Explorers Program. It is targeted to launch in 2033 for a planned five-year mission.
With a mirror measuring about 5.9 feet across, PRIMA is designed to bridge the gap between existing infrared telescopes, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, and radio telescopes on the ground. Its total project cost is capped at 1.2 billion dollars, not including the cost of launching it into space.
- wavelength
- the distance between repeating points of a light or sound wave
- formation
- the process by which something is created
- mission
- a planned space project with a specific goal
- targeted
- aimed at or planned for a specific outcome
- mirror
- a curved surface used in a telescope to gather light
- bridge
- to connect two separate things
- capped
- limited to a maximum amount
- existing
- currently in operation or use
Level 3 — Intermediate
NASA has selected PRIMA, short for PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics, to advance into Phase B of development, the stage in which a mission's preliminary design and technology are refined ahead of construction, marking the observatory as the first selection in a newly created class of missions called Probe Explorers.
Unlike optical or near-infrared telescopes, PRIMA is designed to observe far-infrared wavelengths, a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that carries information about cool interstellar dust, star-forming regions, and distant galaxies that would otherwise remain largely obscured from view.
With a telescope roughly 5.9 feet in diameter, the observatory is intended to bridge an observational gap between facilities such as the James Webb Space Telescope, which observes primarily in near- and mid-infrared light, and ground-based radio telescopes, which detect much longer wavelengths.
Targeted for launch in 2033 on a planned five-year mission, PRIMA carries a project cost capped at 1.2 billion dollars, excluding launch expenses, a budget structure characteristic of the Explorers Program's emphasis on more affordable, focused missions rather than flagship-scale observatories costing many times more.
- preliminary
- coming before the main part; introductory
- electromagnetic spectrum
- the full range of light and radiation, from radio waves to gamma rays
- obscured
- hidden or made difficult to see
- diameter
- the distance across a circular object
- observational
- relating to what can be observed or measured
- flagship
- the largest or most important item in a group
- affordable
- reasonably priced; not too expensive
- refined
- improved through careful adjustment
Level 4 — Advanced
NASA's selection of PRIMA, the PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics, to advance into Phase B development inaugurates a new category of astrophysics missions, Probe Explorers, positioned deliberately between the agency's low-cost, rapid-turnaround Explorer missions and its multibillion-dollar flagship observatories such as Webb.
The observatory's scientific rationale rests on a genuine observational gap: far-infrared wavelengths, too long for Webb's near- and mid-infrared instruments and too short for ground-based radio arrays, carry signatures of cool interstellar dust and early star formation that have gone comparatively under-examined since the retirement of prior far-infrared missions, leaving astronomers reliant on aging or indirect data for an entire slice of the electromagnetic spectrum.
At roughly 5.9 feet in diameter and capped at 1.2 billion dollars in project cost, excluding launch, PRIMA is calibrated to a specific institutional bet: that a mid-scale, cost-disciplined mission class can deliver scientifically transformative results without the decade-long development timelines and cost overruns that have periodically beset larger flagship telescopes.
Whether that bet pays off will not be testable until the mission's targeted 2033 launch and subsequent five-year science campaign, a horizon distant enough that PRIMA's chief significance today lies less in any single discovery than in what its progress, or its setbacks, will suggest about the viability of the mid-scale model NASA has now formally institutionalized as Probe Explorers.
- inaugurates
- begins or introduces something formally
- rationale
- the underlying reasoning behind a decision or plan
- signatures
- distinctive patterns or traces that reveal something's nature
- calibrated
- carefully adjusted to a particular standard or purpose
- institutional
- relating to an established organization or system
- transformative
- causing a major, lasting change
- overruns
- amounts by which cost or time exceeds what was planned
- viability
