Chariklo is a small, icy world in space. It is not a planet. It moves around the Sun between Saturn and Uranus.
Chariklo has two rings. Scientists found the rings in 2013. This was a big surprise. Only big planets like Saturn had rings before this.
Scientists used a big telescope called James Webb. They looked at Chariklo's rings again. They saw something strange. One ring got harder to see through. The other ring got easier to see through.
This is new information. Before, scientists thought small rings do not change. Now they think small rings can change over time.

Chariklo is a small icy object that travels around the Sun far out in space, between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus. It belongs to a group of objects called Centaurs. Chariklo is the largest Centaur that scientists know about, with a radius of about 119 kilometers.
In 2013, astronomers discovered that Chariklo has two narrow rings circling it. This was an exciting discovery because before that, only the four giant planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, were known to have rings. The two rings are separated by about 9 kilometers and sit close to 400 kilometers from the center of Chariklo.
Now, new observations made with the James Webb Space Telescope show that the rings have changed. Scientists compared pictures from different years and found that the inner ring became more opaque, meaning it is harder to see through. At the same time, the outer ring became less opaque, meaning it is easier to see through. These two changes went in opposite directions, which surprised the researchers.
Until this discovery, scientists believed that rings around small bodies stayed mostly the same over long periods, similar to how Saturn's rings are thought to be old and stable. This new finding suggests that small ring systems, like the one around Chariklo, might actually change much faster than anyone expected.

Roughly 13 to 19 astronomical units from the Sun, far beyond the orbit of Jupiter, drifts a small icy body called Chariklo, formally known as 10199 Chariklo. It belongs to a class of objects called Centaurs, small bodies that orbit between Saturn and Uranus, and at a radius of about 119 kilometers, it is the largest Centaur ever identified.
Chariklo earned its place in astronomy textbooks in 2013, when astronomers discovered that it has two dense, narrow rings, a discovery that made it the first body other than the four giant planets known to possess rings. Researchers detected the rings using stellar occultation, a technique in which scientists watch the light of a distant star blink as an object and its surrounding material pass in front of it.
