Astronomers have witnessed a black hole violently shredding a massive star, creating one of the most powerful stellar explosions ever observed.
The event has been given the official name AT2024wpp, but scientists have nicknamed it the Whippet. During the event, the star was pulled apart and turned into a swirling disk of material that fed the black hole.
The explosion briefly released as much energy as four hundred billion suns, an amount so large it is difficult to imagine. It also sent a shockwave racing outward at one fifth the speed of light.
Daniel Perley, an astrophysicist at Liverpool John Moores University, led the team that studied this event. Months after the explosion, scientists noticed fast moving helium, which suggests that some part of the star may have actually survived the destruction.

Perhaps the most theoretically provocative aspect of the observation, however, emerged only months after the initial disruption, when researchers detected anomalously fast moving helium in the surrounding debris field, a signature that complicates the assumption of total stellar destruction and raises the possibility that some coherent stellar remnant, however diminished, persisted through an encounter that current models generally treat as unambiguously terminal.
